HISTORY OF LOMBOK

A poem written in 1365 evokes already Lombok as part of King Hayam Wuruk, king of East Java. Following that legend, the two oldest villages of Lombok, Bayan, and Sembalun, were founded by the prince of Majapahit (kingdom of East Java).

In 1630, the king of Bali went to war to conquer Lombok. He has to fight with the Makassarese, the population running away from the sultanate Gowa of the south Sulawesi kingdom, and the Sasak’s prince who manage Lombok at this period.

In 1674, Dutch used this war between Sasak and Balinese to make a treaty with the Sasak Prince of Lombok. The Balinese had managed to take over the whole island by 1750, but Balinese infighting resulted in the island being split into four feuding Balinese kingdoms. In 1838, the Mataram kingdom brought its rivals under control.

In 1891, when king Balinaise of Lombok raised an army, the Dutch, who always wanted to control Lombok, use this war to conquer Lombok with the support of the Sasak and started to fight for Lombok in 1894. Dutch conquer Lombok and occupied the island from 1894 to 1942.

During World War II, Lombok was conquered by Japanese forces. After the cessation of hostilities, Japanese forces occupying Indonesia were withdrawn, and Lombok temporarily returned to Dutch control. After the subsequent Indonesian independence of the Dutch, the Balinese and Sasak aristocracy continued to dominate Lombok. In 1958, the island was incorporated into the province of West Nusa Tenggara, Mataram, becoming the provincial capital.

After that, Lombok has not stopped developing its tourism, which Bali still inspires. The Indonesian government sees Lombok as the perfect twin island of Bali, which can accommodate the tourist overflow of Bali.

On August 5, 2018, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 located North of Lombok devastated the entire north of the island with more than 550 dead and more than 7,000 inhabitants injured.

Since then, Lombok is rebuilt and preparing to host a major international event.
